Shelly Beach / Sydney / New South Wales / Australia Shelly Beach: Dusky Whaler Shark, Fiddler Ray, Grouper and Co. Mr. Dusky Diving or snorkeling in an open sea always means there will be a chance to meet a shark. If lucky of course, as this is rare occurrence. However on Shelly Beach you will most probably meet Mr. Dusky because there is a nursery for those amazing animals. No need to be worrying as they are not harmful, but I would advice not to bother them. Interesting fact is that this shark matures very slowly not reaching adulthood until 20 years of age. Fiddler Ray They are benthic ( lowest layer of a body of water) in nature choosing shallow sandy bays, rocky reefs and sea-grass beds. They feed on bottoms shellfish, crabs, worms which they crush between their jaws. Fiddler Ray is harmless and easy to approach by divers. Their eggs are golden. Grouper This friendly blue fish is not afraid of people. They are curious swimming around divers hoping that someone will lift one of the rocks where some delicious food might be hiding. Only adult male fish has that beautiful blue colour, female and youngsters are brown or greenish yellow. Usually there are only two males around group of females, once the dominant male dies, the biggest female will change colour, sex, grow bigger and turn into dominant male. Shelly Beach - how to get there Once in Sydney take a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly Wharf. The ticket costs 7,50 dollars one way and the trip takes around 30 minutes. After arrival head towards Manly Beach which is a paradise for surfers. Head right and take the famous Manly to Shelly Walk along the Cabbage Tree Bay.
