Europe's largest Canoe Marathon

submitted by europelmbh on 09/01/16 1

The Dalsland Canoe Marathon, a 55km race through West Sweden's wilderness area about two hours north of Gothenburg, is one of Europe's largest canoe races, attracting a mix of elite and amateur paddlers. The Marathon, which was first held in 2004, helps to promote tourism in Dalsland as well as providing canoeists with a challenge. This year, almost 700 entrants, ranging in age from 12 to 75, have participated at the event. They set off from Baldersnäs to tackle the looping course, through a series of connected lakes and waterways within the picturesque forested area, before finishing at Bengtsfors. Participants competed in different classes with the fastest generally clocking times of four hours, and the slowest crossing the line in about 12 hours. Children covered a distance of 20.7km.
