This is Part I, of a series of videos of videos we are making on Malta. There will be another video of Valletta, one on Sliema, one on Gozo Island and two videos of the Blue Lagoon. Of all the places we have traveled to, Malta has to be one of the best. It is a compact little island with amazing history (read about the siege of Malta by both the forces of Islam and Nazism), beautiful beaches and water (see the forthcoming video on the Blue Lagoon) and great food and friendly people. Valletta contains buildings from the 16th century onward, built during the rule of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem (also known as Knights Hospitaller). The city is essentially Baroque in character, and though World War II left major scars on the city, Valletta was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980. The bastions, curtains and ravelins along with the beauty of its Baroque palaces, gardens and churches, led the ruling houses of Europe to give the city its nickname Superbissima — Most Proud. Valletta is named after the Grandmaster of the Order, Jean Parisot de Valette. Visit it if you can!
