With the city center being designated as a World Heritage Site, the surrounding area is dotted with cultural and historical treasures, including the restored ruins of Pompeii. Looming over the city is Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano on European mainland, w hich e rupted in A .D. 7 9 and buried the city of Pompeii. Traces of Roman, Arab and Norman influences mix here and highlights include the Norman Palace with its golden Byzantine mosaics. (B,L,D) Day 5 Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy Another full day to enjoy Cagliari. Traces of ancient settlements are found all over the island of Sardinia, Neolithic ruins at Nora, Phoenician, Cathaginian and Roman relics near Cagliari, and Arab, Genoese and Iberian heritage is evident in the architecture dating back to the Middle Ages. Cagliari, the capital, climbs a hillside overlooking the aptly named Gulf of Angels. In the old Castello Quarter, the streets are narrow and shaded and the buildings are old, but the beaches of Sardinia are wide and expansive, basking in the Mediterranean sun. (B,L,D) Day 6 At Sea Today is a day of relaxation and rest. Explore and enjoy the amenities and time to catch our breath before our next amazing memories begin. (B,L,D) Day 7 Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain Among Palma’s lovely sights are the Gothic-style Bellver Castle, a 13th Century cathedral and the Almudaina Palace, once home to Mallorcan kings. Or you may choose to sail around this beautiful island on a catamaran, or explore the Caves of Drach, take a motor coach to visit the north coast and enjoy wine tasting. The possibilities are many. (B,L,D) Day 8 Barcelona, Spain The ms Koningsdam will spend 2 full days, including overnight, in the Port of Barcelona. Legend has it that Barcelona was founded by Hercules 400 years before the founding of Rome! Whatever the truth, the city today is a global capital of commerce, fashion, culture and sunshine (300 days a year!). Cruise visitors should start with a walk down Las Ramblas, the glorious treeshaded thoroughfare at the heart of the city. Claim a patch of sand on one of the cities beaches. See what visionary architect Antoni Gaudi wrought. Seven of his creations have been honoured as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including La Sagrada Familia, The Park Guell and Casa Mila. (B,L,D)
