Video Transcript: Hi, Steve Kirsh and Yogi here with the answer to today’s adoption question. The question is: “The adoption attorney asked me to fill out a background form. Are they doing a criminal background check on me?” DISCLAIMER: At Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C. we understand that using words like “give up”or “put up” for adoption are not politically correct terms. In these videos, from time-to-time, we use these terms, not to intentionally upset anyone. We do so only because that is how most people, searching the internet, search for help with adoption. In order for those people to find us, we need to use those terms in these videos and on our website. And the answer is no. At Kirsh & Kirsh, we like to provide as much information to the adoptive parents as possible so that they will have that for the benefit of the child. Medical information, social, education background are some of the obvious things, but we like to let the adoptive parents know what the birth mom’s favorite color is, her favorite season, her favorite musical group, her favorite type of food. My guess is that an adoptee is going to be curious about the type of music the birth mother likes well before the child is curious about whether there are diabetes in the family. Of course the medical information is important, but the background information is even more important. In addition to the background form that we ask expectant moms to fill out, we also ask them if they would provide photographs of themselves and their family, maybe other children if they have those, so that we can also share that with the adoptive parents. If they would like to write a letter, or even if their parents or friends would like to write a letter. We want to gather as much information as possible to share with the adoptive parents. Not because we are doing a background check on the mom, but because we want the child to have the benefit of having that information on into the future. I hope that is helpful. Yogi and I are always here to answer your questions. Thank you #AdoptionQuestions Is a criminal background check required for me to put my baby up for adoption?
