More information about the video content bellow: 1. Saint Valentine’s ashes are in Ireland. The remains of St Valentine, the Patron Saint of Love and Lovers, are held in the Whitefriars Street Carmelite Church in Dublin. They were discovered in the early 1800s in Rome and some three decades later were given to a Dublin priest by Pope Gregory XVI. After nearly a century in storage, the relics were rediscovered about 50 years ago and are now housed in a shrine at the church, beneath a statue of the saint holding a crocus flower. 2. When the former president of Ireland Mary McAleese was elected, after having succeeded President Mary Robinson in 1997, it was the first time ever in the history of the world that a woman followed another woman as an elected head of state. 3. Ireland never had snakes in the first place. According to researchers, the last time Ireland had snakes was probably millions of years ago. The ice age would have killed all of the snakes, and by the time the ice melted Ireland was separated from other countries that still had the nasty buggers. The main point is that as far as scientists are able to deduce, snakes have not existed along with people during any time in Ireland’s history. 4. Wales may have the longest place name in Europe but Ireland isn’t far off! The village of Muckanaghederdauhaulia is located in County Galway. The name means “marsh of the pigs between two seas” – in this case two inlets. Although not the longest name place in the world by a long way, it is believed to be the longest name for a port. 5. Hurling — which is not a synonym for puking — is one of two national sports. This ancient Gaelic game, which has written accounts dating it to at least the 7th century, is like field hockey... but in the air. 6. Ireland was the last country in Europe to permit divorce. It was narrowly approved by a 1995 referendum when only 50.28% voted in favour and the first-ever divorce granted in Ireland was in 1997. Irish law allows couples to divorce only if they have been living apart for four years. In 2015, Ireland had the lowest divorce rate in Europe and the third lowest in the world, behind Chile and Mexico. 7. The Great Famine (Irish: an Gorta Mór) or the Great Hunger was a period of mass starvation, disease and emigration in Ireland between 1845 and 1852. It is sometimes referred to, mostly outside Ireland, as the Irish Potato Famine. During the famine approximately 1 million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland, causing the island's population to fall by between 20% and 25%.
