Appointed as Master of the Queen’s Music between 2004 and 2014, Davies has composed over 300 pieces in all genres; many of them breaking barriers between contemporary classical and vernacular idioms. Most of these belong to stage and symphonic poem categories such as the three presented here. In An Orkney Wedding (with Sunrise), Maxwell Davies describes a traditional Scottish wedding which he attended and lasted until the next morning, witnessing a spectacular sunrise.
