Las Palmas Gran Canaria 2016 We had a week in Las Palmas Gran Canaria in February 2016. The beach of la Canteras with its 3 kilometres of golden sands and a promenade going from La Puntilla to the auditorium Alfredo Kraus, with some excellent refreshment holes on the way. One way of seeing Las Palmas is to take the open top bus tour. The ticket lasts for 24 hours and you can hop on and off the bus has many times as you like. The tour also includes a 1 hour walking guided tour of the old town of Las Palmas. A visit to the old town of Vegueta, the original settlement that gave birth to Las Palmas at the end of the 15 century, is a must. The old town is full of cobbled streets, walked on by Christopher Columbus during his days in Las Palmas. There is a wide range of architectural styles ranging from late gothic to renaissance. La Canteras, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria An excellent walk is to walk from the statue of Mary Sanchez to the peninsular which is about 3 kilometres. The walk will take you past the harbour on to some man made walk ways with cliffs to one side and sea on the other. The last part of the walk is on a board walk on a rocky beach follow it to the end looking back at the view across the bay. The big thing in Las Palmas in February, is the Carnival and the drag queen gala based in Santa Catalina Park, near the port. It seems that the whole of Las Palmas dresses up in fabulous costumes and everybody has a great time. The final part of the show is the drag queen gala, which is taken very seriously, followed by a firework display in the bay. The trip to the Botanical Gardens is well worth it. You can take the 301 bus from Las Canteras bus terminal to the botanical gardens. The garden was founded by the Swedish botanist Eric Sventenus in 1952. With the aim of conserving and protecting the rich endemic flora of the island. Once there it’s a steady walk down a windy path overlooking the garden.
