But away from the resorts there’s a more laidback feel, and the opportunity to experience the real character of this Canary Island. On the southern side, the small, fishing village of Puerto Mogan offers holidaymakers the chance to wander its charming streets and bridged canals. Further inland, the town of Fataga has traditional whitewashed houses with terracotta tiles and winding streets, all set against a rugged mountain backdrop. Gran Canaria’s interior is also a good base for hiking, with plenty of tracks and mountain paths. There are two nature parks that are worth a ramble, the Parque Natural de Tamadaba and the more southerly Parque Natural de Philancones. Both offer walks through a variety of landscapes, from semi-arid deserts to coniferous pine forests.
