Announcer: Welcome to another HealthNews Video news release brought to you by HealthNews. In today’s news, the mainstream media has once again picked up on a recent study questioning the efficacy of Omega-3 even though the study used incorrect doses that were extremely low. A recent article published in Newsweek contested whether or not Omega-3s help prevent cognitive decline, going so far as to say these supplements are a “waste of money.” Rather than rely on a whole body of research surrounding Omega 3s, the article is focused solely on one study. Unfortunately the study used doses as low as 350 mg of DHA, which is less than what might be found in one 6-ounce serving of salmon. DHA is a specific type of long chain Omega 3 that is the most prominent fatty acid found in the neurological system and is actually part of the structure of your brain and eyes. DHA is required in significant amounts to see effects in cognitive function studies. This is an important reminder not to rely on one study, or one magazine article, for conclusive information on nutrition. It’s important to look at the broader research as a whole before ruling out how Omega 3s and other natural supplements can benefit our health. Remember your best source for diet, nutrition and supplement information is your Metabolic Typing Advisor, Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist and Functional Medicine Practitioner.  Call them today!
