Подгорица, lit. "under the small hill"), is the capital and largest city of Montenegro . Podgorica's favourable position at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers and the meeting point of the fertile Zeta Plain and Bjelopavlići Valley has encouraged settlement. The city is close to winter ski centres in the north and seaside resorts on the Adriatic Sea. A census in 2003 put the city's population at 136,473. The Podgorica Municipality contains 10.4% of Montenegro's territory and 27.3% of its population. It is the administrative centre of Montenegro and its economic, cultural and educational focus. Podgorica je glavni i najveći grad Crne Gore, dok Cetinje ima status prijestonice. Prema popisu iz 2003. imala je 136.473 stanovnika (prema popisu iz 1991. bilo je 117.875 stanovnika). Šire područje Podgorice obuhvata 10,4 % teritorije Crne Gore i 27,3 % njenog stanovništva. Podgorica je glavna raskrsnica puteva u Crnoj Gori. Njen pogodan položaju na ušću reke Ribnice u Moraču u Zetsko-bjelopavlićkoj ravnici. Grad je blizu zimskim centrima na sjeveru zemlje i ljetovalištima na Jadranskom moru. Podgorica se nalazi blizu ostataka rimskog grada Dokleje. U srednjem vijeku ovde je postojalo naselje koje se zvalo Ribnica, a pod ovim imenom grad se prvi put spominje 1326. Podgorica je od 1878. ušao u sastav Kneževine Crne Gore. Od 1946. je administrativno sjedište Crne Gore, a za vrijeme SFRJ Podgorica se zvala Titograd.
