Nearly 800 guests joined Ambassador Wohlers at the United States Embassy in Skopje to commemorate American Independence Day. This Fourth of July was the 236th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Americans honor the Declaration for the human values that it describes and defends -- Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness -- which are viewed as universal values - belonging not just to American citizens but to all citizens of the world. The large audience of guests - including the Macedonian President and Prime Minister, Macedonian government Ministers and other representatives - joined in the anniversary celebration of America's independence. With the American Flag flying above the stage and the flags of the fifty states waving in the distance, the Macedonian National Anthem was sung by Maja Sazdanovska and the U.S. National Anthem was sung by Carolyn Gibson. Ambassador Wohlers' remarks highlighted the strengths of the U.S. relationship with Macedonia over the years and stressed the importance of continued support and cooperation with Macedonia in the future. This year's Independence Day celebration culminated in a spectacular fireworks display that was visible from most of the city. U.S. Embassy Skopje is honored to have celebrated our country's birthday in the the Republic of Macedonia.
