Albanian/Serbo-Croat A celebration in Kosovo has become deadly. British peacekeepers shot and killed a man who stood on top of a car and fired a gun into the air. Ethnic Albanians had crowded the streets of the Kosovo capital to celebrate their own declaration of independence and news that the KLA and Serbian Orthodox Church were willing to form a joint council. But by the evening, the streets were again filled with ethnic Albanians bent on venting their anger toward the Serbs. Jubilant ethnic Albanians were celebrating on Friday in the streets of the Kosovan capital. And they had every reason to beat a drum for peace. Earlier, at the United Nations H-Q, it was announced that a group from the K-L-A and a delegation from the Serbian Orthodox Church had agreed, to live in harmony. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Today I believe is the first time that Albanian and Serb leaders of Kosovo meet to talk to one another to establish a dialogue on the most pressing issues of the moment which are security, the right to life, and property rights for all people in this province." A joint-council would be a step towards Kosovo Serbs and ethnic Albanians coming together to power-share in the future. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "We have a rich common heritage. We want to preserve it and therefore call on everyone to stay in Kosovo and come back to Kosovo. KFOR and UN-MIK have promised us to do their best to guarantee your safety. We trust them and urge you to do likewise" SUPER CAPTION: Hashim Thaqi KLA Political Leader The Serbian Orthodox Church condemned the regime of Slobodan Milosevic. SOUNDBITE: (Serb-Croat) "Both sides condemn the crimes of the Milosevic regime. Persons suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity shall be brought to justice. We support role of International War Crimes Tribunal. Peace can only be built on justice, not revenge." SUPER CAPTION: Father Sava Orthodox Priest But even as Radio Pristina was calling for a community to return to a way of law and order, unity and nonviolence, there were rumblings of unrest once more. Kosovars in the streets were out in force, to again avenge their treatment from the Serbs. They tore down and dragged through the streets the symbols of Serbia.
