Eng/Serbo-Croat/Nat Explosions have rocked the U-S sector of eastern Kosovo, killing two people and injuring four others. A U-S spokesman said American troops saw flashes from weapons being fired from an ethnic Albanian settlement and a car speeding away from the scene early on Wednesday. Meanwhile, in Pristina, hundreds of ethnic Albanians from the northern town of Mitrovica have staged a protest to demand more action from the U-N to allow them to return to their homes on the Serb side of the divided town. The explosions hit the town of Donja Budriga, in the U-S sector of eastern Kosovo, in the early hours of Wednesday morning. One elderly woman and an elderly man - both Serbs - were killed. The woman, who was carrying water through her yard, was dismembered by the blast. Four other people were injured, including one critically who was evacuated to an American military clinic near Urosevac. The explosions also damaged a number of buildings in the town. According to a U-S spokesman, American troops saw flashes from weapons being fired from an ethnic Albanian settlement and a car speeding away from the scene. In Belgrade, the independent Beta news agency quoted local residents as saying 15 mortars were fired at Donja Budriga and the neighbouring village of Partesa. Several mortars were also fired at another Serb village in the area but there were no casualties. One woman in Donja Budriga described what happened. SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) "I was sleeping when I heard the first boom. My daughter was sleeping downstairs. I was so afraid for her. I don't know how we are going to live here anymore." SUPER CAPTION: Milica Sladkovic, Serb The attack occurred one day after Russian soldiers patrolling in the American sector shot and killed three Serbs after they ignored orders to stop beating two wounded Albanians and instead opened fire on the peacekeepers. The incidents have raised tensions in Kosovo in the run-up to the scheduled September 19th demilitarisation of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). The K-L-A's attacks against Serbs triggered the 18-month crackdown that led to the 78-day NATO bombing campaign. A U-S officer described the attack on Donja Budriga. SOUNDBITE: (English) "What happened was some mortar rounds exploded in the town of Donja Budriga, I believe it is, and two people were killed. One was a Serbian male and one Serbian female, and then four people were injured. One of those injured was evacuated to Camp Bonstale where they're being treated, and they're currently in stable condition." SUPER CAPTION: Captain Steve Stover, US Liaison Officer on the incident Meanwhile in Pristina on Wednesday, hundreds of ethnic Albanians from the northern Kosovo town of Mitrovica took to the streets to demand more action from the United Nations to allow them to return to their homes. U-N chief in Kosovo, Bernard Kouchner, and K-L-A political leader, Hashim Thaqi, went along to the protest to address the crowd outside the U-N offices in the provincial capital.
