English/Nat XFA A close aide to moderate Kosovo Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova was shot to death in the stairwell of his apartment building on Thursday in an attack signaling an increase in politically-motivated violence in the province. Sources within Rugova's political party confirmed that Xhemajl Mustafa was killed outside of his apartment in the Pristina building where he lived. Eyewitnesses said Mustafa had suffered massive head wounds. NATO-led peacekeepers and United Nations police converged on the scene and remained there throughout the day, collecting evidence. Rugova's Democratic League of Kosovo defeated leaders of the former rebel Kosovo Liberation Army in municipal elections last month. International officials had expressed concern at the time that some of the losers in that election may not abide by the results.
