Riga Radio & TV Tower and Views from the Tower, Latvia - 14th January, 2014

Whilst recently in Riga I also visited the city's Radio and TV Tower, which is the tallest structure in the Baltic countries and in the European Union. It was built between 1979 and 1986 with funding from the central government of the Soviet Union. Its highest point reaches 368.5 m (1,209 ft), which makes it the third tallest tower in Europe. This video features views of the tower from Zakusala Island, which is located in the middle of the Daugava River, approximately 2 miles South east of the City centre. The video then features views over Zakusala, the Daugava River and the city of Riga and its suburbs. This footage is near dusk in January, so the light conditions are not great. The landscape has a light dusting of snow. To get to the TV tower, we took a bus from near Riga Central Railway Station to Zakusala, the pay-on-board fare was 1 Euro 20 Cents each, cheaper fares can be bought from kiosks near bus stops. From there we travelled approximately four stops to Zakusala island which is across a bridge over the Daugava River. From the bus stop you need to go down steps, under the bridge and then walk 2 kilometres along a footpath to the tower. Whilst this sounds arduous it was definitely worth it. The entry price to go up the tower was very reasonable, around 3 Euro each. This is off the beaten track, and most visitors to Riga don't go there, but it does offer quite a unique experience and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
