Fore Edge Books

submitted by cshinn on 01/23/14 1

A fore-edge painting is a scene painted on the edges of the pages of a book. The painting is not visible when the book is closed. In order to view the painting, the leaves of the book must be fanned, exposing the edges of the pages and thereby the painting. The books in this video are housed in Special Collections storage at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library. They are part of our permanent collection.
