For generations, West African music and oral history have been traditionally passed down through the family line of Griots (musicians, oral historians, praise singers, storytellers). It has been said when a Griot dies it's as though a library has burned to the ground. At the University of The Gambia, efforts are underway to attain the Griots' oral history and cultural knowledge from the respected elders of their society. A shared desire among the community of Brikama, the University History Club unites musicians and historians while blending the past with the present and upholding the idea that, with the onset of globalization, preserving one's own culture leads to the preservation of the entire world.
