Vila Vicosa and Arraiolos are small towns that capture the feeling of rural Portugal. White-washed Vila Vicosa offers serene churches, quiet streets and an imposing ducal palace in the Mannerist style. A well-preserved medieval castle overlooks the town, and contains a agricultural museum. In Arraiolos the central castle is little more than a ring of stone walls, though still very pretty, and fun to explore. A single church occupies the center of this ancient fortress. The town is quaint, with winding streets and typical blue & white colors. These towns make good stops, for a few hours, if you're traveling in the region.
