VILA REAL é uma cidade portuguesa na Região Norte, e sede de um município. A cidade cresceu num planalto situado na confluência dos rios Corgo e Cabril e tem como pano de fundo as serras do Alvão e, mais distante, a do Marão. Com mais de setecentos anos de existência, Vila Real foi outrora conhecida como a "Corte de Trás-os-Montes", devido ao elevado número de casas brasonadas que então tinha. Muitos aristocratas construíram grandes palácios na cidade durante os séculos XVI e XVII, que granjeou à cidade o nome "Vila Real". É a cidade natal de Diogo Cão, o primeiro explorador a chegar ao rio Congo (ou rio Zaire). VILA REAL is a Portuguese city in the Northern Region, and head of a municipality. The city grew up on a plateau situated at the confluence of the rivers Corgo and Cabril and has as background the mountains of Alvão and, more distantly, the Marão. With over seven hundred years of existence, Vila Real was once known as the "Court of Trás-os-Montes," due to the high number of stately houses which had then. Many aristocrats built great palaces in the city during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which gave the city the name "Royal Town". It is the hometown of Diogo Cão, the first explorer to reach the Congo River (or Zaire River).
