Sankt Pölten (St. Pölten) is the capital city of the State of Lower Austria. The oldest part of the city is built on the site of the ancient Roman city of Aelium Cetium that existed between the 2nd and the 4th century. The name Sankt Pölten is derived from Hippolytus of Rome. The city was renamed to Sankt Hippolyt, then Sankt Polyt and finally Sankt Pölten. The city is home to the baroque cathedral of Sankt Pölten.
