Said to be the longest covered bridge, Chapel Bridge also depicts Lucerne's history. Behind me is Lucerne's Kapellbrucke or Chapel Bridge. Probably one of the most photographed attractions of Switzerland. Said to be the longest covered bridge in the world, it was originally built in the 14th century to act as part of the protective wall around the city. Sadly, a large part of it was burnt in a fire in the early 90's, but most of it has since been inextricably restored. What is really interesting about the bridge is that its wooden ceiling has various triangular shaped paintings. Many of the paintings were destroyed in the fire as well. Some have been repainted but many are lost forever. The main attraction at the end of the bridge is this octagonal tower called the water tower. It has served various purposes including that of an archive, treasury, prison and a torture chamber. And of course we are in Lucerne so a great view is virtually guaranteed. I am Nadia Migdal showing you Lucerne.
