The oldest company in the Netherlands, Royal Tichelaar Makkum, was founded over 430 years ago. But about twelve years ago, it almost had to close its doors forever. There was no more demand for its traditional tiles and pottery. But then Jan Tichelaar found a way to reshape the company for the 21st century. He offered the expertise in craftsmanship to top designers and architects and they jumped right on it. Many designers were eager to use the company's traditional techniques in new ways. Fashion designer Alexander van Slobbe created ceramic pearls for his necklaces. Hella Jongerius created the b-set, where every cup or plate is different, depending on its place in the oven. www.tichelaar.nl CREDITS Commissioning editor Submarine: Geert van de Wetering Producer: Olivia Sophie van Leeuwen Director: Noud Holtman Camera: Hans Bouma Sound: Robil Rahantoekman Editor: Niels de Roos Colour Correction: Maurik de Ridder Music/Sound Design: Pastelle Music Produced by Submarine, Femke Wolting & Bruno Felix www.submarine.nl Commissioned by DutchDFA www.dutchdfa.com Like Dutch Profiles on Facebook www.facebook.com/dutchprofiles
