A tour of Keukenhof flower garden in Lisse, Netherlands. When you are visiting The Netherlands around the end of March to halfway May it is impossible to ignore the Keukenhof. The Keukenhof is located in Lisse and is a park filled with over 7 million flower bulbs flourishing and among them are 800 different kinds of tulips. All companies, small or big, want to display their flowers here. But it is not just flowers you can find here, artists exhibit their art too. Statues, glass art and so on. You can easily spend 4 to 5 hours roaming around the park, and that is if you would 'rush' through it. Every year the park has a different general theme and within the park you can find different areas, which are named after the Dutch Royal Family. These areas all have their own sub-theme. The general theme of 2015 is the honoring of the famous Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. This year it has been a 125 years ago that Van Gogh died, so to honor him all of the gardens are inspired on him and his art. The Keukenhof is open once a year and only for a small period of time, so you have to be aware of the opening times before you go. And not only that, but you should also plan your trip ahead. Instead of buying all your tickets separately (train, bus, entrance) there are plenty of combo tickets you can buy. These combo tickets include train, bus. entrance fee and sometimes a small gift (for instance: flower bulbs). The park is not only for adults, there are also things to do for the kids. There is a children's farm to pet animals, a scouting expedition (free), and even a playground. There are multiple ways to get to the park. Best option is to go by train and bus, as traveling by car will probably end up in a traffic jam. There are four different train stations you can depart from: Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam Airport), Leiden or Haarlem. If you stay in Amsterdam your first instinct will be to take the bus from Amsterdam or Schiphol Airport, as this is a bit closer to the city. However, if you take this route be aware you might have to wait 2 to 2.5 hours on the bus. We recommend going through Leiden or Haarlem and taking the bus from there. If you absolutely cannot or do not want to go through Leiden or Haarlem we have another way to get here. This is actually only known by locals, but we are willing to help our fellow travelers. If you would like to know how to avoid the big crowds and long lines at the bus stop contact us and we can tell you the quickest way.
