Then we went to a cottage on the other side of the road and the woman there called out to the fire engine and they just said to go up the hill to get out of the way. So we just did that, really, and ended up at the top of the hill in the - well, first of all we couldn't get to the community centre so we had to climb up through somebody's garden, then follow the road along and ended up at the community centre or the village hall or whatever." 14. Camelford Leisure Centre STORYLINE: Rescue services were continuing to search the area around the coastal village of Boscastle, in Cornwall, southwest England on Tuesday, after severe flash flooding. Devon and Cornwall Police said more than 100 people have been evacuated from the area, a popular summer tourist area with sandy beaches and picturesque villages. The flooding was sparked by 2.4 inches (6 centimetres) of rainfall in just hours on Monday afternoon. Residents in Boscastle, which lies in a valley leading to the sea, reported that an estimated three-foot (1 metre) wall of water poured through the streets at 40 mph (65 kilometres per hour). Scores of people were airlifted from cars, trees and rooftops where they had scrambled to evade the rapidly rising water, and eight people have been treated for conditions ranging from hypothermia to broken bones. The Coastguard said that police divers will search for as many as 50 vehicles, believed to be empty, that were washed into a harbour. British tourist Patrick Smith said he was on a day trip to the village of Camelford when the floods hit, forcing him to run for shelter. Smith and other tourists have now been evacuated to the Camelford Leisure Centre, which lies at the top of a hill. The flood waters were nine-feet (3 metres) deep in some areas, filling bed-and-breakfast lodges and tea shops, officials said.
