Half way down the North coast of Cornwall in the UK lies Newquay. Originally a small fishing village called towanblystra, until 1439 when the go ahead was given for the building of a new quay in the harbour and the village was renamed. An ever-popular tourist destination with its beautiful beaches of golden sands, Newquay has recently become a magnet for a different type of visitor. For many the attraction starts just out to sea. Surfing really took off here in the 1960's and today the surfing industry dominates the town. Surfing is estimated to generate an annual income of over 40 million pounds, which easily puts it in the top bracket of English holiday resorts. The reason Newquay is such a good place for surfing is down to its position on the North coats of Cornwall. It looks right out over the North Atlantic Ocean and there are also lots of beaches with slightly different angles that create varying amounts of surf. Today Newquay is rated a world-class venue for the sport with several leading compettions taking place here every year.
