In June 2013, Hull was announced that it had made it to the short list of places vying for UK City of Culture 2017. A place of culture; this is Hull. The exact year Hull was founded is not known but it was first mentioned in 1193. The town and city of Hull has served as market town, military supply port, a trading hub, fishing and whaling centre, and industrial metropolis, and is unique in the UK by having its municipally-owned telephone system from 1902, including white, not red, telephone boxes. There are many established tourist attractions, making Hull a must see place of the UK. Places include the historic Old Town and Museum Quarter, Hull Marina and The Deep, a city landmark, plus many more places.
