Elephants of Bertram Mills Circus parade through the centre of Gloucester in 1957. I will add more detail of the Gloucester buildings when available. That same season, the Circus travelled to Victory Park in Cainscross (Stroud), with the elephants travelling by train to the then closed Dudbridge railway station on the former Midland route to Nailsworth and Stroud (Wallbridge). On that occasion an Elephant decided to rub against a high red brick wall belonging to Mr Sandling - the Basketmaker in Dudbridge (opposite Redlers factory) The wall partly collapsed and I believe that a relaxing time in a deckchair was brought to a sudden stop. The Elephants continued nonchalantly over the canal bridge and up Bridge Street into Cainscross. I was fortunate to be helping my Dad use a ladder at the time, and had a superb view of the procession and the incident with the wall. Circus clowns visited each class of Cainscross (primary) school during the next week, and the whole school was able to visit the large menagerie of animals during school hours. My thanks to Lily for allowing me to capture this from an old standard 8mm film.
