Navajo and Ritual
Chaplain Scott Johnson and learning from Navajo burial rituals.
Brother Scott Johnson, Franciscan Friar and Chaplain, has a long and distinguished history of serving his country and his fellow human beings.
Born in Austin Texas, Johnson graduated high school in 1967 at the height of the conflict in Viet Nam. “As was the case in those dark days, they sent the "bubba's" from South Austin to Southeast Asia for our Senior Trip,” Johnson recalls.
Upon his return from Viet Nam, Johnson enrolled in the University of Texas on the G.I. Bill and graduated in 1975. He later attended a Protestant Seminary, graduating in 1980. “I did a lot of graduating in my early years,” Scott observed with customary wit.
“I wear two very distinct hats. As a Friar, I help Catholics with their spirituality. As a Chaplain, I help people express their spirituality regardless of their religion.”
Johnson lives in Austin with his wife Kristina, a son Salvatore, who is a budding Franciscan and a daughter named Scout who is very fond of the earth.
