Lori Pratt works as a coalmine safety inspector for the largest mining company in the country and her husband John is volcanologist by training. When an accident happens in the mine, John, Lori, her father and their two children try to find out why there is acid and unusual heat escaping from the mine. Suddenly expositions occur and molten lava begins to overrun the entire city and melt everything in its path. Now John, Lori and family must escape the mine and blow-up the local dam to save what's left of the city and to save themselves.
