Allyn Rose won the title of Miss District of Columbia 2012 on June 17, 2012, and competed in the 2013 Miss America pageant. She had previously represented Maryland at the 2011 Miss USA pageant. After losing her mother to breast cancer at the age of 16, Rose partnered with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Tigerlilly Foundation. Her platform of educating youth in preventive healthcare measures, Breast Cancer: Planning a Marathon, Running a Sprint, has been featured on Good Morning America, America Live with Megyn Kelly, E! News, Today Show, Katie Couric, and in PEOPLE Magazine, US Weekly, Cosmopolitan and other national publications. The impact of losing three family members to breast cancer helped persuade Rose to announce in November 2012 that she would undergo a double mastectomy as a preventive measure to prolong her life. With a B.A. in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland, Rose plans to become a constitutional attorney. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
