His current research interrogates the post-9/11 visual representations of Arab Americans in Hollywood, Egyptian, and Arab American filmmaking. The National Center for Institutional Diversity has recognized Mahdi as a 2016 Exemplary Diversity Scholar for his contribution to the issue of diversity in research, teaching, and community service.
