How to Cure Anxiety (Part 4 of 6): Meditation

HOW TO CURE ANXIETY: MEDITATION When I first started meditating, I could not focus. I was constantly scratching myself or my shoulders would hunch. My back would get sore. And worst of all, my thoughts would never shut up. I wanted so much to turn off my brain because I was full of anxiety and my thoughts were driving me crazy. Meditation is actually really, really helpful for anxiety, but you have to do it in a way that isn't torturous for you. And the way you do that is by not resisting your thoughts. My problem was I was constantly resisting my thoughts. I was constantly trying to tell myself 'shut up' to think better thoughts, to not think that, don't think that, it's inappropriate. And then I finally just gave up one day. I just sat back and let all of my thoughts come in and didn't assign any weight or value to them. Meditation became a lot easier. I was able to observe my thoughts like I was a detached outsider. After two weeks of observing my thoughts for just ten minutes in the morning, right after I woke up, my thoughts were no longer able to freak me out. Instead of this incessant chirping that I was constantly trying to silence, it just became background noise. Each morning, what I suggest you do is, right after you wake up, you sit on the ground with your back against the wall. Your posture doesn't have to be perfect. Just close your eyes and observe your thoughts. Practice for ten minutes. Don't try to change your thoughts. Don't try to be perfect in your mind. Don't try to have this beautifully calm mind. Just watch your thoughts like clouds floating by as a detached outsider. There was another technique I used to help my thoughts. I wanted to become more positive and supportive and loving towards my self, which I hadn't been when I was anxious. I was constantly scolding myself for not having good thoughts and not being my normal self. What I started doing, which really helped, was I wrote down everything that I was worried about. Every single thing. I would write it down with pen and paper. I wouldn't use the computer because if you use the computer you get distracted, you start doing email, Facebook, all that stuff. I started writing down everything that I was worried about. After I finished writing down all my worries, I took out another piece of paper and I wrote down one reason why I was grateful for every single thing I was stressing out about. At the time, I was really stressed out about the fact that I was unemployed and didn't know what I was going to do with my life. I had just quit two really cool jobs back-to-back and everyone around me congratulated me for being in those positions... and I left. I was basically doing nothing during the day and I was really critical of myself, thinking I've come so far... I've done all this good stuff... I need to be working! I need to be productive! I need to be the CEO of a company some day and I need to be rich and I need to change the world! I was constantly coming down on myself for not doing those things, for cutting off my progress, for quitting those jobs. And so one of the things that I was really stressing about was the fact that I was unemployed... and I was grateful for that. I wrote down that I was grateful for that because for the first time, in years, I had given myself permission to leave something I no longer wanted to do. This is how you become your own best friend. If you came to your friend and complained about all this stuff, they wouldn't criticize you for complaining about it. They wouldn't say, "Oh stop. Your life should be perfect." That's basically what you are doing to yourself. Your friend would say, "You have all this stuff to live for. You have all this good stuff going for you. You just need to recognize it." So take it into your own hands and write this stuff down. It helps a lot. ================= WATCH THE SERIES ================= Part 1: Mindset www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoG14VtJNHg Part 2: Play www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XfGBeVSdCs Part 3: Sleep and Naps www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4cGba4x610 Part 4: Meditation www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LZHUh3C8N4 Part 5: Panic Attacks www.youtube.com/watch?v=Swz5OZ7dk-c Part 6: Diet www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1NTCTXpDRI ================================= GET A FREE CHAPTER FROM MY BOOK ================================= Visit: playitaway.myinstapage.com You can also buy the book on Amazon: amzn.to/1lMzbN7 About the author: charliehoehn.com/about Video shot and edited by Tim Stiefler & Mitchell Shotts.
