Use your art to better humanity: Simeon Moore at TEDxBrixton

submitted by 1MA on 11/27/15 1

In this powerful talk (and performance) Simeon (aka Zimbo) shares the harsh truths of growing up "carrying a gun like an accessory". He describes his experience of street-life as a "disease and mental prison". He tells of how, when he wanted to unchain himself from this existence, there was an absence of support; meaning he had nowhere to go but back to crime. With extraordinary determination he eventually turned his back on lucrative gang membership to live a different way. About Simeon Simeon Moore, aka Zimbo, is from Aston, Birmingham. A father and prolific hip hop artist, he also heads up One Mile Away: an organisation dedicated to supporting young people at risk of being caught up in youth crime and dropping out of school. One Mile Away was born out of the award-winning Channel 4 documentary of the same name, which follows the journey of two men from rival Birmingham gangs who try to bring about a truce. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
