Gabriel Botnick ⎪ Pleased to Meat You: A Jewish Ethic of Eating Meat

submitted by SPwrite on 11/27/15 1

The Kosher food industry is broken. While a growing number of Jews shop at farmers’ markets and wish to eat only organic, local, and ethically raised meat, the Kosher food industry is still dominated by industrial farming and processed foods. Consequently, many find themselves torn between a desire to uphold Jewish tradition and a commitment to modern food ethics. What can we do when our Jewish values clash with our modern values? Is it better to eat non-kosher, grass-fed beef than kosher, factory-farmed cows? What alternatives are there to the mainstream Kosher food industry? This presentation will answer these questions and introduce us to the world of small-scale, kosher slaughter and a Jewish perspective on the ethical consumption of meat.
