Obama will be meeting with the presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - who joined NATO in 2004 - to assure them of NATO support and security. The US president will then fly to the UK for the NATO summit. Following escalation in terms of rhetoric and sanctions against Russia following the Ukraine conflict, NATO have proposed a force of several thousand troops (estimated to be around 4,000) to be based in Eastern European and Baltic states. Russia in response has said it will adjust its military doctrine to factor in the greater military threat that NATO expansion presents.
