Alzheimer's disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. Starting January through June 2013, with stellar speakers from various fields - neurology, psychiatry, psychology and family medicine, the Stanford GEC, in collaboration with the American Geriatrics Society, California Area Health Education Centers (AHECs), and the Community Health Partnership, is offering a new webinar series "State of the Science: Dementia Evaluation and Management among Diverse Older Adults and their Families. The New Diagnostic Guidelines for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias webinar was presented Jan 16, 2013 by Dr. Michael Greicius. He covers the new recommendations of the DSM-V diagnostic criteria for dementia and assessment of dementia using biomarkers. Some of the series topics will include evidence based interventions for persons with dementia and their caregivers; recognizing and differentiating depression, delirium and dementia; using interpreters with dementia patients; ethical issues in dementia care; pain control and medications in patients with dementia; and end of life care for dementia patients.
