Foreign vessels involved in illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing are damaging Somali fish populations, marine habitat, and the welfare of Somali fishers. Our report, Securing Somali Fisheries, finds that foreign vessels remove 77% of the total fish caught in Somali waters. Foreign trawlers are causing habitat destruction and have impacted 95% of the bottom habitat in shallow waters. This level of unregulated fishing threatens the fish stocks and the livelihoods and food security of Somalis, who lack the capacity to control these foreign vessels. For sustainable fisheries development, IUU fishing must stop, and these foreign vessels need to be limited, licensed, recorded, and regulated immediately.
