Jacob was the second son of Isaac and Rebekah. His twin brother was named Esau. One day when Esau came home hungry after working on the field, he sold his birthright to Jacob for a mess of pottage. When his old father got sick and blind, with his mother´s help Jacob suceeded in getting the birthright from his father as well. Fearing Esua´s wrath Rebekah sent Jacob to Haran to their relatives. In Haran Jacob served his mother´s brother Laban and his two daughters Leah and Rachel, who he both marrried, for seven years. After six more years Jacob went back to Canaan with his family. On his way, one night before he was supposed to meet Esau again, he got attacked by a man who he wresteld with all night long. This man, who turend out to be a heavenly being, gave Jacob the name Israel "God´s warriors" because he had wresteled with God and Human and prevailed. In the end Jacob and Esau reconciled.
