Practicing aikido can be compared to being a lifeguard because the person a lifeguard would save is the biggest hazard to the lifeguard. In viewing the attacker as a drowning person, we see the attack as a cry for help and our response as an offering of assistance. Using props can help us see how the beneficent intention in rescuing a drowning person is analogous to protecting an attacker. Thanks to practice partner Romain Samygin
