In a series of rages the man drunkenly beat and abuses her, and finally the woman decides she has to get away from him. One night she attempts to slip away, leaving a pot on the stove to cause a distraction. This results in a fight that causes a slightly accidental house fire. She escapes with minor injuries and the man dies in the fire. Physically and emotionally scarred with a perilous case of post-traumatic stress, she hides away from the world in a painful daze. Here she avoids detection for years, living out in the attic of an abandoned house. Eventually her mental instability and the curiously gnawing sound of church bells in the morning draw her out of the house where she finally realizes and relives her past. To put an end to her sad story, she finds her way to the source of the sound and takes it and herself down in flames once and for all.
