Lead Change Exercise for Barrel Racing

submitted by TeamRoper on 12/12/13 1

Courtesy of barrelracingdrills.com Use this drill to do a figure 8 at the top of your first barrel (this horse goes to the left barrel first). The rider is circling until the horse feels soft and responsive before changing directions. Her circles aren't perfect, but that is the goal. When your horse is changing well in the center of your figure 8 you can approach first like a "real" barrel turn and over finish it a hair and drive for the lead change. It might not come the first try but with small steps and even by the next ride, it will improve.
