Highland Green is intended to be a LEED-certified building in the heart of the Cherokee Triangle. It represents the future of construction in Louisville—as well as an enormous commitment to sustainable business practices from Highland Cleaners and Doric Real Estate. Green building practices were considered in every step of the design and construction process for Highland Green. One of the major goals was to reach Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, which would make it one of the highest rated LEED buildings in Kentucky. The Discovery Center is an educational classroom designed to teach visitors about green construction and how it's been incorporated into the Highland Green building. This interactive experience features short video vignettes—which viewers can watch only after proving power to the projector by riding a bicycle generator—along with a collection of resources covering just what makes a building green. What is Geothermal energy? How do solar panels work? What exactly is LEED Certification? What is a green roof? Visitors to the Discovery Center can find the answers to these questions and more, in a fun environment conducive to learning with age appropriate information for those in first grade or college. The Discovery Room is also available for community use with free access for civic organization meetings.
