Open for classes in Fall of 2012, the HHB is Oakland's first green building project. This is also their first geothermal heat pump system. A 400 ton geothermal heating & cooling systems uses Variable Refrigerant Flow heat pumps using a 256 vertical bore hole ground loop under the parking lot to the south of the building. A 600 square meter solar thermal array on the roof gives heat to help in the winter, but mainly to help drive a Desiccant Dehumidification ventilation system to help knock out the humid Michigan summer moisture, so that the heat pumps can be even more efficient.
