Did you know if someone tells you to keep your head down you should run for the hills? This tip has been around it seems forever, you hear it all the time people say, "keep your head down." Sam knows what I am talking about because it seems in his question his friends had the same advice. He asks... "Hey Sean, I am having some serious trouble topping the ball. My friends tell me that I need to keep my head down. Is keeping my head down the correct thing to do in order to solve this problem." Well, keeping your head down is probably one of the worst things you could do in the golf swing. I have had a few students come to me that went out and played a round of golf with their friends they have told them, "hey you're topping the ball because you are lifting your head." Annika has done alight.... Think about one of the greatest women's golfers of all time, Annika Sorenstam. She was a person who rotated her head and swivel it with the shot. Her statistics for ball striking were off the charts, often leading Greens In Regulation and Total Driving every year on tour. One of the reasons why your friends say keep your head down is because you are having issues with everything else below. What I mean by this is if they say your head is coming up, what is more than likely happening is your legs are driving forward to much then your body lifts then your head lifts. Topping the golf ball is often caused by a chain reaction... -First your legs -Then Your Body -Finally Your Head Comes Up So lift your head is not the problem. The problem is that your legs are to overactive or you might be kicking your hips in towards the ball. Which in turn is raising your body. One thing I would like you to focus on when you go to the driving range the next time is imagine that you are making golf swings with your tailbone/butt resting against a wall. So when you get to the top of your swing feel your tailbone is staying on the wall throughout the swing. Take a look at this video on how to stop topping the golf ball... So just to clarify lifting the head is not the problem. It is more so to do what your body is doing. The next time you go to the range really try and feel that the tailbone/butt is staying back. This will allow you to stay in your posture better and your head will remain the same height. Do you have a friend you always says, "keep your head down to stop topping the golf ball?" Send this link to them that is not the case. We talked about Annika Sorenstam rotated her head quite a bit, can you think of any other golfers that did the same?
