What shots do your kids need, and why are they so important? Vaccines provide protection against viral and bacterial infections that can cause serious illness or death. Immunizations rev up the body's immune system by introducing a very small amount of the bacteria or virus, so that your child's body can create antibodies to fight it off. These diseases are not anything you would ever want your child to have. Small pox vaccinations have completely eliminated the small pox disease, and polio is rare in most parts of the world. Meningitis vaccines have proven very effective, as well as infections like measles, mumps, and tetanus. If more than 10 percent of the United States stopped receiving vaccinations, all of these horrible diseases would return. Thankfully, 99 percent of Americans vaccinate their children starting in the first few days of life. The immunization schedule helps children maintain long term protection. Even with rare, minor side effects, the benefits definitely outweigh the risks. Vaccines for children are difficult to watch as a parent, but you should know that you are doing what's best for your child!
