Watch as Parents helps your child with back to school fears! Going back to school and starting a new year is exciting, but all that change can lead to social anxiety for your child. Help your child know what to expect when he begins his first day of school. Try and visit the school beforehand if it's new, and even look up his teacher on the school website so he's familiar with her before meeting her. Establish a back-to-school ritual, like walking to school with a friend or an after-school snack, so he knows what to expect and to keep some signs of anxiety at bay. Plan ahead for difficult moments to help your child with overcoming shyness associated with going back to school. If he asks "What if I have no one to play with during recess?," you can respond with something along the lines of "What would you do in that situation?" Brainstorm different solutions that could help alleviate some of his social anxiety, like joining in a game of tag. If separation is difficult for your child, keep your goodbye short and sweet. Rather than saying how much you'll miss him, opt for saying how much you're looking forward to hearing about his fun day. Remind him where and when you'll pick him up to help him with overcoming fear of going to school. Keep confident about starting a new school year, and your child will follow suit. Maintain an optimistic and open mind with back-to-school worries to help ease your kid back into the school year groove as easily as possible!
