Back to School: How to Make Friends

If you've got a shy child on your hands, making new friends can be a challenge for him or her, especially when encountering a new situation like starting school. Here are some tips for making new friends you can share with your child to help open the door to new friendships. Encourage them to seek out a friend with similar interests to them, rather than being drawn to the most popular or athletic children in their class. Making friends is about mutual attraction, and someone who already has a close friendship with someone else or has a different interest may be harder to be friends with. Instruct your child on how to make new friends by showing them how to be friendly, yourself. Kids want to be around peers who are happy and having fun, and simply saying hi or offering a compliment are great ways to communicate openness. He may want to do something nice for a friend, but make sure he doesn't go overboard, like giving away money or personal possessions. Explain to him that it's okay to have a variety of friends. Put forward the idea to find a friend to ride the bus with and find a friend to chat with during recess. Make sure that he knows there's no reason to force someone to choose between friends. Instead, tell him to try and get along with the friends of his new friend. Socializing is one of the most fun aspects of going back to school, and something he will value years down the road!
