Newborn Sleep: The Importance of Self-Soothing

submitted by Brent on 07/25/15 1

Watch as Parents shows you why self-soothing is so important! Baby sleep training and helping him learn how to fall asleep on his own are some of the most important skills your newborn can master. If your baby sleep schedule, between the ages of 12 to 18 weeks, allows him to fall into a deep sleep on his own without your help, begin the practice of putting him down awake early. On the flip side, if he needs extra rocking, body contact, or sucking to fall asleep, do so before it's time for bed. Like adults, babies go through sleep cycles of deep sleep, light sleep, and brief waking and may notice them throughout the night. Your newborn sleep patterns will begin to develop into a consistent routine if you are able to resist continually being the soother. Around four months old, your baby will also have a higher capacity for memory and will be able to remember how to settle himself down to sleep through repeated experiences. Beginning these baby sleep methods as early as possible will make self-soothing easier on both of you further down the road!
