Put Yourself In Their Shoes - Special Needs Awareness

submitted by Curate2Educate on 06/15/15 1

We created this video in Spring 2014 for our Girl Scout Silver Award Project. A Silver Award is a Take Action Project that identifies a need or an issue within the community. A Silver Award requires at least 50 hours of work and is the highest award a Cadette can achieve. The goal for our Silver Award project is to promote awareness, suggest ways to show acknowledgement and acceptance of students with special needs in our community. In our video, we have interviewed many different parents and children with disabilities such as Autism, Down syndrome, and Dyslexia. We choose to discuss these three disabilities because growing up in school, these are the ones we encounter the most. After the students have finished watching the video, there are four things we want them to remember: -understand what a disability is -how it feels for the family and disabled person -to think about others and how bullying or mistreatment affects the disabled person/family -make an impact in one or more special needs students’ life We decided to do a project in this area because we feel it is not addressed enough and is a very important topic in schools today. We have shared our DVD with schools in our school district, and are looking for ways to promote it. This project took over a year and 80+ hours of hard work and dedication. The video was completely filmed, edited, and produced by us. We hope you enjoy this video as much as we do! :-) Thank you, Megan Balderas Samantha Place Sophie Wallace :-)
